Aura Outreach

  Partnerships

The Aura project supports a strong educational and public outreach (E&PO) effort through formal and informal education partnerships with organizations that are leaders in science education and communication. Our goal is to educate students and the public and inform industry and policy makers how Aura will lead to a better understanding of the global environment.

The MECSAT (Medgar-Evers College SATellite) High Altitude Balloon Project
Currently in its third year, this is a high-altitude BalloonSAT student project based at Medgar Evers College. It involves launching sounding balloons to altitudes of 100,000 feet or more with payloads consisting of communications, science and imaging equipment. More information on the project can be found here.

The GLOBE Program
The GLOBE Program (Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment) is a worldwide network of students, Globe teachers (10,000 schools in over 95 countries), and scientists working together to study and understand the global environment. Ground-based instruments developed by Dr. David Brooks measure ultraviolet-A (UV-A) radiation and aerosols to support measurements taken from the Aura spacecraft. A tropospheric ozone measurement developed by Langley Research Center is also a GLOBE protocol. More information about the GLOBE instruments and protocols can be found here.

National Museum of Natural History
The National Museum of Natural History (working with Aura scientists) created an interactive exhibit on atmospheric chemistry as part of its Forces of Change program. The exhibit, titled "Forces of Change" was displayed at NMNH from January - November, 2006. The exhibit conveyed the role that atmospheric chemistry plays in people's lives through the use of remote sensing visualizations and museum objects. The exhibit will be available for travel.

American Chemical Society
The American Chemical Society has produced special issues of the publication ChemMatters. These issues focus on the chemistry of the atmosphere and various aspects of the EOS Aura mission. The special editions of ChemMatters have reached approximately 30,000 US high school chemistry teachers and their students.

Aura's Education and Project Outreach program will also be present at science and environmental fairs and science and technology conferences to demonstrate how Aura fits in to NASA's program to study the Earth's environment.
