Sulfur Dioxide over Hawaii Aura's OMI instrument provided the imagery used in the animation of the Sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions over Hawaii. The volcano, which has been erupting since 1983, began venting elevated levels of sulfur dioxide from Halemaumau Crater, located atop the volcano, in mid-March. + More |

Tropospheric Ozone Aura will make the first space-based comprehensive and near global ozone measurements in the lower atmosphere, mapping the sources and transport of aerosols and chemical pollution on regional and super-regional scales. + More |

Stratospheric Ozone Is the ozone layer changing as expected? Aura will measure the ozone and ozone-destroying radicals from nitrogen, hydrogen, and chlorine compounds to determine if the stratospheric ozone layer is recovering, as predicted by scientific model. + More |

Aura and Climate Change Aura will quantify and map the variability of ozone and water vapor, important "greenhouse gases" in the upper troposphere, and how aerosols either absorb or reflect radiation, in order to help us understand climate change. + More |

OMI Measures Volcanic Gas Cloud On May 20, 2006 a major lava dome collapse at the Soufriere Hills volcano triggered an explosive emission of volcanic gases. Sulfur dioxide in the resulting gas cloud was tracked by OMI for 3 weeks as it moved westwards across the Pacific. + More |
![]() | Asian Dust Storms Asia is suffering through the worst dust storm season in at least five years. The eighth major storm this year clogged the air over China, Korea, and Japan with sand from the Taklamkan and Gobi deserts. The sand picks up a toxic mix of heavy metals and carcinogens as the clouds pass over China's industrial areas, exacerbating health problems due to these storms. + More |

NO2 concentration over the United States from September 24, 2004 till November 7, 2004
This animation shows the daily presence of NO2 over the United States. Clouds obscure the Aura-OMI instrument from taking meaningful measurements so here the clouds are displayed in white. High levels of NO2 are shown in red.

Nitrogen Dioxide concentration over China from September 24, 2004 till November 7, 2004
This image is of Nitrogen Dioxide,NO2, on October 16, 2004. Nitrogen Dioxide concentration is clearly evident around Hong Kong, Shanghai, Bejing, Soul, and Osaka. Tokyo is covered in clouds so the Aura-OMI instrument can not measure the Nitrogen Dioxide concentration.
